New Semester, New Adventures

Posted on Sep 22 by

The students of GRAB Lab are a few weeks into the new academic year and are already starting to get back into the lab. The relaxed days of summer research are over and now we are full speed on new courses, new chemistry, and new research experiments. The whole crew – Julia, Ryan, Kristy, and Hailey – is back along with Hunter who is joining us to start a new project on nanoparticles and fingerprints. We’re looking for new group members and are happy to see a few new faces looking to learn more about our work. It is also great to see alumni checking back in. Grace and Anna sent an awesome email about their first day of GC-MS work in grad school! We have big plans ahead, including the Summer Research Poster Session, writing abstracts for the Spring ACS Meeting, the Materials Research Society Conference, and a visit to Camilla’s high school classroom! Stay tuned for more amazing blog...

Professor of Chemistry

Posted on Sep 1 by

I am very happy to report that Sr. Janet, the Board of Trustees, fellow Faculty, Administrators, and Alumni have promoted me to Professor at Emmanuel College! I don’t feel that I would be at this point in my career, sharing in and promoting the mission of the College and the mission of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur, sharing chemistry social justice and mentoring amazing students, without the guidance and support of the Emmanuel community. This is an exceptional place and I am very proud to be a part of...

Floating the Charles

Posted on Jul 28 by

The group took to the Charles River for a float and a paddle to celebrate a successful summer. It was a beautiful afternoon and we had a great time taking in the views, narrowly missing sail boats, honking at Duck Boats, and not falling in. Chemistry research happens in the lab and out of the...

Kristy Ta’23 – Soaking in (the sun) the calcium phosphate

Posted on Jul 26 by

Kristy’s first summer research was such an informing and unique experience! She learned about new instruments and even came up with her own experiments to run in the future! With guidance from Dr. Gerdon, and the creative juices flowing, lots of things got done this summer! All the experiments had their ups and downs but there was never a time where there wasn’t something new to analyze! Besides challenges in the lab, Kristy has been keeping the GRAB Lab socials active to bring in peers and new audience by sharing our experiments and experiences! Also, check out Kristy’s recent lab...

Hailey Young ’24 – Making the most of research

Posted on Jul 20 by

After taking off the week of the Fourth to visit family and friends, Hailey is back in the lab and ready to pick up where she left off. She is continuing to perform plate reader experiments to determine the effect of DNA origami on calcium phosphate mineralization as well as visualizing the origami structures via AFM imaging. This Monday was the GRAB lab’s annual alumni gathering; it was great to both meet and reunite with the alumni who attended! Hailey’s happy to be back in Boston with her fellow researchers and is ready to make the most of these last weeks of summer...
