Rylie is very excited to be back in the lab full-time this summer! Rylie has begun working on the calcium carbonate project for GRAB Lab and has been spending her time running affinity experiments. For these experiments, Rylie is becoming best friends with our spectrophotometer as she measures absorbance for each sample. She is happy to be learning how to use many instruments in the lab and analyze all the data she has collected from them. Rylie is excited to see what she and the other student researchers will accomplish this...

Amanda is so excited to be back in the lab for summer research! After some lab clean-up and literature research, Amanda was able to start running more affinity experiments with DNA and collagen hydrogels. She has also done some planning for the rest of the summer. She has lots of experiments lined up, which means their will be a lot of data to analyze! So far, Amanda is having a great time working with the other summer researchers and she can’t wait to share the results of the experiments she has...

It is amazing to see students and faculty back to work in summer research! The distractions of a full set of courses during the semester are gone and now is the time for students to immerse themselves in research projects. Students can eat, sleep, drink, and dream research! But, then take a nice walk around the Fens to clear your head, reflect on the results, and try it again. We’re excited for all that Amanda, Rylie, Julia, Luz, and Grace will get to do this summer. Stay tuned for updates on our NSF-funded biomineralization work and for info on a new course development projects for forensics using GC-MS and SPME. Finally, how else to start the summer than with Tasty Burger take-out on the quad?! The tater tots were...

The GRAB lab gathered for the last group meeting of the semester to reflect on research achievements, to congratulate Gabby on graduation, and to make some new goals for the coming summer! Some achievement highlights include: designing new experiments, learning new instruments, helping new research students along, and simply getting into the lab in-person. Our goals are even better: being in the lab with the team, contributing to a new project, completing the next set of experiments, and celebrating completion of the semester! It is this time of year especially that Dr. Gerdon likes to take a moment to thank the research students – Gabby, Rylie, Amanda, Dianna, and Julia (not to mention years of research alumni!) – for all that they do in research. These projects would go no where without their hard work and dedication. Usually this means some pizza a Blaze, a trip to Tasty Burger, or maybe some JP Licks. This year it means a Zoom group picture with slices of pizza on our heads…..so weird…....
